HOME RENOVATION
- Typically, if you are retaining a contractor to undertake a general home renovation they will need to have a current Building licence.
- They will be obliged to ensure they retain tradespersons with current Specialist licences or other licences as required by law.
- You should still confirm the licence status of any tradesperson working on your property.

PLUMBING
- Plumbers can work on either water or gas plumbing but must have the appropriate Specialist licence.
- They must be able to show you they have a current licence in Plumbing, draining and gasfitting.
- Within the Specialist licence category Plumbing, draining and gasfitting, they must also be qualified to do specific types of plumbing work in the following categories:
- Plumbing includes water plumbing, sewerage and sanitary work. It excludes Roof Plumbing.
- Water Plumbing includes any work to do with mains water supply.
- Draining is any work on sewerage systems.
- LP Gasfitting includes work on liquid petroleum (LP) gas systems including pipes and appliances.
- Gasfitting includes work on non-LP gas systems including pipes and appliances.
- If the project requires the removal or installation or reconnection of electrical hot water heaters or other electrical appliances then they must also have a current Specialist Licence in Disconnection and reconnection of fixed electrical equipment.
ELECTRICAL
- Any work on electrical systems in your home must be done by a tradesperson with the appropriate Specialist licence.
- They must be able to show you they have a current Electrical work licence.
INTERIOR FINISHES
- Typically, these projects involve painters, drywall installers, flooring specialists, carpenters, or interior designers.
- You should ensure your tradesperson has the right qualifications to do the work.
- The following categories require a current licence:
- Carpentry
- Decorating
- Dry Plastering
- Wet plastering
- Joinery
- Kitchen bathroom and laundry renovation
- Painting
- Wall and Floor Tiling
EXTERIOR FINISHES
Typically, these projects include roof trades, siding installers, carpenters, glazers, or masons.
You should ensure your tradesperson has the right qualifications to do the work.
The following categories require a current licence:
- Carpentry
- Glazing
- Installation of security grilles and equipment
- Painting
- Roof plumbing
- Roof slating
- Roof tiling
- Stonemasonry
HEATING, VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING
These types of projects require tradespersons with a current Specialist licence to undertake work on air conditioning systems, electrical systems, or gas systems.
Any work needed to install, maintain and service an air-conditioning system in your home must be done by a tradesperson with a current Air conditioning and refrigeration work licence. This includes ducting within your home and a limited scope of associated electrical wiring work.
Excepting the work within scope of a Air conditioning and refrigeration work licence above, any work on electrical systems in your home must be done by a tradesperson with a current Electrical work licence.
Any work on gas systems in your home must be done by a tradesperson with a current Plumbing, draining and gasfitting licence with specific qualifications in either of:
- LP Gasfitting which includes work on liquid petroleum (LP) gas systems including pipes and appliances, or,
- Gasfitting which includes work on non-LP gas systems including pipes and appliances.
LANDSCAPING
These types of projects may require a licensed tradesperson to undertake the work. Typically, tradespeople should have a current licence in:
- Building
- Carpentry
- Fencing
- Structural Landscaping
- Swimming pool building
- Stonemasonry
- Waterproofing
MINOR HOME REPAIRS
These types of projects may require a licensed tradesperson to undertake the work. Typically, tradespeople should have a current licence in:
- Minor maintenance and cleaning
- Minor trade work
- Swimming pool repairs and servicing
COST – Less than $5,000
- For projects of less than $5k in total cost, your tradesperson does not need a current Contractor licence.
- Tradespersons must have a current licence in the trade required to execute the project.
- In all projects where a Specialist licence is required, they must have a current Specialist licence.
COST – $5,000 – $20,000
- Tradespersons must have a current Contractor licence to undertake work in excess of $5k value.
- Tradespersons must have a current licence in the trade required to execute the project.
- In all projects where a Specialist licence is required, they must have a current Specialist licence.
- You should have a contract to cover the project.
- NSW Fair Trading recommends this contract for projects of this scale.
COST – Over $20,000
- Tradespersons must have a current Contractor licence to undertake work in excess of $5k value.
- Tradespersons must have a current licence in the trade required to execute the project.
- In all projects where a Specialist licence is required, they must have a current Specialist licence.
- You should have a contract to cover the project.
